Exceptions:

PAN could replace TAN to allow TDS deductions under Section 194IA (immovable property transactions) 194IB (taxable bond redemptions) as well as 194M (mutual fund sales).

The significance of TAN

The TDS/TCS requirements require TANs. The ITD requires you to mention your TAN on TDS/TCS statement such as refund forms, deposits challans and deductee certificates and other papers. Not mentioning or omitting the TAN could be the cause of the payment of a fine of up to Rs. 10,000 fine. Returns from TDS/TCS could be denied without the TAN.
